instead of whining about what i could be doing, [30 Dec 2008|12:07pm]
[ mood | hopeful ]

i'll make a list of things to be grateful for, even if i could be in portland, freezing and drinking with friends.

-the fact that i even have friends in other areas that want me to visit
-friends here that i tend to neglect in favor of my far-away (and therefore superior) friends
-canadians in my office
-a nice boyfriend that seems to put up with me
-that crazy family of mine (built in friends=sistery sweet)
-i get to hang out in graduate school and get paid very little to think, read, and ask questions that no-one cares about, but for some reason, i'm now finding both fun and enjoyable
-my music taste--which is rad
-my ability to spend inordinate amounts of time creating things for other people (which may or may not be appreciated, but still)
-the fact that the insurance company is going to help me out (and replace stereo...how uncool is it that it was stolen?)
-its 70 degrees
-i'm going to mammoth for my birthday...and only taking people i like
-my best friend from pre-school and i are going for martinis and manicures today (hopefully, or at least we talked about it)
-despite appearances otherwise, i can actually form sentences in academic papers
-part of my job involves going to other countries on other peoples' dimes (thanks, fellowships, both legitimate and not)
-team bacon meetings tomorrow
-video games
-books
-drawing
-board games

-soon i'll be in portland, anyway. and then, the fun. before that, the intellectual challenge. and now, back to work (after calling aforementioned friend re: manis and martis)

i'm trying, goddamnit! this isn't some kind of metaphor, people. goddamn...

DO it. [15 Dec 2008|10:08pm]
[ mood | amused ]

Del Close and John Brent recorded the successful comedy album How to Speak Hip (Mercury 1961). On How to Speak Hip, Brent plays Geets Romo, a hipster who consents to guide the square interviwer, Close, through the basic lexicon of hip. How to Speak Hip came with a "Hip Manual" to use for further self study.

Track notes for the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album

6. Let's Go Away For Awhile
(Brian Wilson)
Recorded Jan. 18, 1966 at Western Recorders, Hollywood, CA.
String and flute overdubs recorded Jan. 19, 1966 at Western Recorders, Hollywood, CA.
Released Oct. 10, 1966 as the B-side of Capitol single 5676 (Good Vibrations).

Originally recorded with the designation Untitled Ballad, this song apparently had several tentative titles before Brian settled on Let's Go Away For Awhile. A Feb. 23, 1966 Capitol memo lists the song by the title The Old Man And The Baby. And Tony Asher recalled Brian having an acetate disc of the track bearing another title.

"There was an album out called How to Speak Hip ... a lampooning of the language instruction albums," Asher explained. "I played it for Brian, and it destroyed him, killed him. Brian picked up a couple of references on the album. One of them was this hip character that said if everyone were 'laid back and cool, then we'd have world peace.' So Brian started going around saying, 'Hey, would somebody get me a candy bar, and then we'll have world peace.'" Asher said Brian "even made an acetate disc with a label on it with the title. He talked about calling Let's Go Away For Awhile 'And Then We'll Have World Peace.'"

it is sort of cold and i sort of miss santa cruz a lot...although it's just as likely that i miss my memories of santa cruz.

i'd really like to sit on a porch in the cold sunshine right now, sipping black coffee and listening to records. damn you, late night longings...and for other things.

[ music | Hang them All-Tapes n' Tapes (thanks, genius button.) ]

One of the most life-affirming things that I can possibly do is to go and dance my ass off at a great show. (I only have so many years left before I can no longer shake around like an idiot in public and not be locked up in an institution). So I did! It was great. It was better than great. It was one of the few things that I had really been looking forward to, and I was buzzing around for a week beforehand.

I saw the Presidents of the United States of America. (Again.)

Yes, still amazing. Best show in Los Angeles, hands down Why? The Energy. The Rockness. The Crowd...they're actually into it, dancing around and jumping and waving their hands and singing all the silly lyrics...

Yes my friends, it was glorious. Even if you only know the hits (like Pdurph) you'll still have a great time (and an Astro burger afterwards. Delicious!)

GTs, guys. GTs.

highlights [16 Aug 2008|11:07am]
[ mood | lethargic ]

check out my flickr: http://www.flickr.com/alexfeesh to see some sweet sweetass vacation/vienna pics. i will post more later, as i have a new month's worth of MB. woot.

vienna was sweet, and i learned that i like graduate school much more when i am not at school-school, and instead living in a dorm with a bunch of international students, drinking, eating, laughing, researching, sightseeing, and so on.

prague was also cool, in sort of town-cum-disneyland kind of way. it was a prelude to the greatest part of the vacation: folk festival in a tiny border village!! woot! beers, dancing, music, bacon, no english spoken, honey wine, dancing in mud, hilarious czech grandmas, new friends, and fannypacks galore.

budapest...i recommend not going to so many big cities in one trip.

back to vienna, medical oddities, catacombs, sweet hang out time with physicist andy, and so on.

now its jetlag, unpacking, letdowns, and the realization that i won't get paid until november. well, fuckaduck.

quickie [24 May 2008|11:30am]
i figured that i should update my journal, although i'm not quite sure what to write about...hmm.

i finally got to hang out with my next-door neighbor, angela, and her friend from 3rd grade, charlotte! i am always so amazed at these people who have lifelong friends from elementary school. i had one friend from pre-school, but we don't talk anymore, which makes me sad, but at the same time, it was kind of one-sided, as she never called me or made an effort. i prefer friends who like to call me from time to time! anyway...i think i made a lot of good friends in college, although they all live far away, so i don't get to see them as much as i would like. i've also found some nice people here, finally, in graduate school, that i feel safe around. and, as a bonus, we'll be travelling around eastern europe together! ha!! oh, and there's pdurph, who is obviously awesome.

in other news...let's see. i got super smash brothers! yes! i am going to play this weekend, i hope. i also have a lot of research and reading, which i'd better get a hoppin' on.

yup. sorry so lame.

a quick one while he's away [02 May 2008|07:51am]
some highlights:

-didn't get into the program i wanted to-they rejected me in german (i assume it's because my german is so good...) but that meant i was free to design my own program. i have booked a course in vienna to do a month of german, and will visit friends rachel and leslie in prague and budapest, respectively. pdurph will be coming out towards the end of my program, and so we will go to munich as well. i will also hopefully go to other places in germany, but we'll see. there's a huge military museum in vienna: sweet!

-gatsby (our cat) had seven teeth removed, and so we have to give him amoxicillin (you know, the pink stuff that tastes so good? well, it tasted good to me when i was little, at any rate. for medicine, that is.) i hate giving oral meds to a cat. so sad. i think he hates us both.

-that's about it, i guess. life has been filled with lots of fun and reading. sigh.

[ music | eagle*seagull-photograph ]

today begins day one of kitty experiment. his name is fatty and he is very pretty and friendly (although also shy). he has a stripy tail and a pretty raccoon mask.

most of the day was given up to preparing the house for the kitty. we hope he likes it, and we hope we like him. if so, we rename him something dignified, like "charlemagne" or "charlie" for short. you know, first holy roman emperor...or the sexy ex-hobbit from lost.

i also kicked pdurph's ass hardcore at "you don't know jack," had an all right, if school-filled, spring break, and am looking forward to a trip to forever 21 and the wiltern this week. BLACK KEYS!

i would've probably liked this quarter more had i realized that i've spent the last 7 weeks in class with the dude that played robocop. for serious. it's this guy. i am always last to the party. but he did give us free dvds of a movie that the guy who did "battle of algiers" did... with brando...which was pretty cool! i should watch it soon so that i can talk about it in class next week.

cres and un-cres [06 Jan 2008|08:08pm]
[ mood | anxious ]
[ music | tosca tango orchestra-waking life soundtrack ]

portland (porkland, pornland) was crescent fresh, super cres at best. we hit the mt. hood, drnk lots of tasty beer, ate maple bacon doughnuts (yes, i took a bite, and yes, voodoo doughnuts serves vegan doughnuts too), saw a ninja rock band, had a pancake party with jody and eli, and laughed and laughed and laughed. i had a 6 hour conversation new year's eve, over martinis, covering all the major american wars and state's rights, which was awesome. (awesomely nerd-core). there were many things not yet done of the epic variety, but i can definitely see portland as a place to hang out and live for the indefinite future. i am reminded that i might not be able to find a job, but sigh, i don't know what i'd do with my life anyway, so whatevs. i'll keep on keepin on, and i did come up with some definite ideas of things i might like to do and will discuss with a career-esque counselor.

on other portland news: i got a sweet ass jacket, some socks with angler fish on them, and 2 darkness cds. i also went to powell's, drank some delicious coffee, and had a generally nice time, at one poiny shocking pd with my statement that "life is grand." i also experienced more garlic than any one person should ever eat in their life on the top of a veggie pizza.

going back to school is definitely un-cres. i feel this horrible knot of horridness at the mere thought of it all. i need to suck it up and stop whining. i have lots of things to be grateful for, and i need to keep my big whiny mouth shut tight. or, failing that, whine at someone that is professionally equipped to take it so that i don't have to feel bad about dragging all my buddies, boyfriend, and family into the muck of my lameness.

(ps) sifl and olly!

tummy trouble [28 Dec 2007|10:08pm]
man, i feel like kirby when he accidentally swallows something that is bad for him. thanks, classy nordstrom's. thanks for the asian chicken salad food poisoning. i feel sick just typing about it. the last time i got food poisoning was from asian chicken salad as well. ugh. at least everything leading up to throwing up was teh awesome, including hanging out with margo and getting some new girly makeup! yes!

on another note, christmas was good, up until dinner. the people were nicht so fantastisch. speaking of german, that fucking sister cities program might not even let me take german while i am there. now i'm glad that i sent off the DAAD application after all.

i'm going to portland tomorrow, which i am excited about, but i'm also stressed out about my life and what i'm doing with it. i could blame genetics for this horrendous and ongoing freakout, or i could suck it up and meet with a career counselor on campus. or student psychological services. or a masseuse and a beer. i think a good combination of those all would be excellent.

lastly, since i will not be here on new year's, i will make some resolutions now.
they include:

-(from last year) bring the ruckus.
-don't lose sight of all those other things that i like to do, like art and reading comics and playing video games and music.
-schedule some time every week for some alex-time; whether it's hanging with the baby sis or sitting on a beach and drinking a mai-tai before bed, it needs to get done or i'll go insane.
-continue to rock out with my cock out, and hopefully see some more shows.

that's it for now.
seacrest, out.
